A GREAT MILE

H'LACHLAN'S FINE RUN SATURDAY'S SCRATCH MEETING Returning what is probably the fastest time for a mile ever recorded in Dunedin, the New Zealand mile champion, L. C. M‘Lachlan, registered by far the most outstanding performance of the Anglican Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club’s third scratch meeting at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon. Competing in a race .in which the field included the former New Zealand champion, J. G. Barnes, Ivor Craig (the Otago mile champion and third in the New Zealand mile championship last season), and G. Austin (formerly wellknown Canterbury runner), M‘Lachlan ran a brilliant race, the pace in the early stages being supplied by Austin. M'Lachlan ran very smoothly and with heaps of dash to return 4min 22sec, time which even the great R. A. Rose was unable to do on the Caledonian Ground. ■ The time was. 4-sseo faster than that returned by M'Lachlan in

winning the New Zealand title last season, and represents one of the finest performances of his career. On his running during the present season he should be a certainty for inclusion m the New Zealand team for the Centenary Games. In the 440yds' A grade hurdles J. Gerken showed that he has a lot of promise at this event by returning the fair time of 62 4-sscc, and in the B grade event J. G, Barnes showed versatility by doing 62 3-osec. The Otago junior champion, H, S. Ramsay, won the 100yds A grade in 10 3-ssec, and the Otago quarter-mile champion, A. L. Price, won the 440yds A grade event in 53 ' l-ssec. R. M'Laohlan, the severiteen-year-old brother of the mile champion, won the 440yds B grade in the good time of 55 3-ssec. ■ There was again good competition in the various events, and the conduct of the meeting left nothing to be desired.
