HOME SCIENCE GRADUATES ABROAD

Series No. 5. Dr Elizabeth Neige Todhunter, another of Otago’s distinguished graduates, obtained the degree of bachelor in home science in 1926, and the degree ot master in home science in 1928. l‘or four years Miss Todhunter acted as assistant in the chemistry and nutrition department, Otago Univerity, first as a, part-time assistant, and later as a full-time assistant. ~ , In 1929 she went to the United States to continue her studies. She attended the lowa State College, Ames, lowa, taking courses in physiological chemistry, and later entered the chemistry department, Columbia University, New York, where she obtained the degree of doctor of philosophy in 1933. AVhile studying she had held part-time research positions at Columbia University. AA’hile in New York Dr Todhunter resided at International House, a residence hall for men and

women students of all nationalities who are studying in New York. For two years she was on the stuff of Intel’national House, part of the time as assistant director. In September, 1934, Dr Todhunter was appointed assistant professor of nutrition in the home economics department, AA 7 ashington State College, Pullman, AA r ashiugton.. Miss Annie S. (Nancy) Aslin, after completing the course for the; degree of bachelor of home science, was appointed home science teacher of “ Archerfield,” Dunedin. In 1928 she decided to pursue the course for the master of home science degree, which course she completed in 1929. During this period Miss Asljn was a part-time assistant in the chemistry department of the Home Science School. In 1930 she was appointed full-time assistant in the above department. In August of the latter year Miss Aslin received the appointment of rcseardh tutor at the University of Toronto. The success of her work in Toronto has reflected much credit on the home science department of our city. Miss Aslin has announced her engagement to Dr Diamond, who is at present in London. . Miss Helen Maxwell Jeans is a homo science graduate who recently spent over a year in Great Britain, For six months she specialised in dietetics at the University College Hospital of London. At this hospital four months are devoted especially to calculating and preparing the special diets required in the hospital, and visiting the patients; one month is spent mainly in studying and assisting in the housekeeping department of the whole tiospital, and in the last month most tune is spent in the wards and in the outpatient department. Dietetic departments of other hospitals, both in London and Edinburgh were also visited. While in Germany she was very interested in the stressing of the importance of diet in conjunction with the treatment at some ot the spas visited. , , During her time abroad Miss Jeans was also enabled to see something ot the treatment of domestic subjects (which is similar to our borne science) in primary and secondary schools anti of the domestic subjects of training colleges in. London and Edinburgh. Upon her return during the present year Miss Jeans resumed her position as home science teacher at the Dunedin North Manual Training Centre.
