FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14., (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) NEGLIGENT DRIVING. ' The hearing was continued in the afternoon of the charges against Thomas Gibson Waters (Mr I. Stevenson) of negligent driving and of failing to keep to his correct side of the road. Defendant was convicted on the first charge and fined 20s and costs. The second charge was dismissed. SUPERVISION REQUIRED. Alfred Charles Pratt pleaded not guilty to the theft of a number of bottles, valued at ss, the property of Margaret Kelly, and a quantity of clothing valued at £l, the property of Muriel Anderson. Sergeant Stark said that the accused was a bottle gatherer. He called at Mrs Kelly’s house at Fairfield and went to the washhouse, from which he removed bottles and old clothes and subsequently sold them. Margaret Kelly gave evidenca? that the bottles had been collected by her sons for a self-denial fund, and the accused bad no authority to remove them or the clothes., The latter were' owned by a Mrs Anderson, who lived with her. The accused said he had been told by a boy six years of age that his mother had bottles for sale, and he had taken the bottles and clothing, giving the boy 6d. Mr Garbutt (probation officer) said the accused had been before the court on a previous occasion. , The accused presented a problem, as he was married, but could not get relief work. He was already on probation, and Mr Garbutt suggested that he be placed under probation for a lengthy period, as it was obvious that he required to be under supervision. ■ On the first charge Pratt was admitted to probation for two years, and he was convicted and discharged on the second count, on condition that he made restitution of £l.
