MOSGIEL FIRE BRIGADE

SOCIAL GATHERING From the present month onward* Mosgiel Fire Board will no longer exist. The borough, , or fire district, will now come: under the: Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board. Later on Green Island Borough and other will, : it is hoped, be added. The Mosgiel Brigade. wiU now be under Superintendent. J, J. Salmon as a separate unit. To mark the close of' the old regime ' a'social gathering was held in the Mosgiel Fir* irigade Hall. There was a good attendance, over which Superintendent J. White presided. \ . Included among those present were Mr Lawrie (chairman pt Otago and. Southland Underwriters’ Association), Messrs Brabant and Callander (Metropolitan, Board members), the members of the Mosgiel Board, members and honorary members pf the brigade. An apology for, unavoidable absence was received from .the mayor (Mr A. F. Quelch). The Borough Council was represented by Crs Frew, Smeaton, and Smith. . . Since the Mosgiel Fire Board cemmenced to function the membership was Messrs A. F. Cheyne (chairman), S. B. Macdonald, J; C. Callander, A. F. Quelch, and J. F. Frew, with Mr \ R. D. Rogers as secretary, Mr John White as superintendent, and Mr J. Smeaton as deputy-superintendent. Superintendent White extended a cordial welcome to aJL Toasts and songs filled in a pleasant oouple of hours. ' Songs ■ were '. contributed by Messrs Waldie and Borrow, the latter also playing the accompaniments. The history of the brigade was recounted, and good wishes for the future extended to all. The firemenwere also thanked for-their services to the town. ■ ■ Tile Chairman said it gave him pleasure to hand to each member of the retiring board, and to the -secretary, an engraved walking stick. This was to show the brigade’s appreciation of their’ services. The recipients in turn replied, thanking the brigade members 'ana wishing them every , success-under the new regime. At an interval in the programme Mr Frew, on behalf of the brigade, presented Foreman W. W. Turnbull' with a gold bar for: twenty-seven years’ service, and a similar token to Foreman H. Smith for thirteen .years* service. Both firemen made appropriate acknowledgment.
