LAWN TENNIS

[By Recorder.] The following tournament dales have been approved by the New. Zealand Association;—( Auckland.—December 22, 24, 26, -27, 28.29. North Otago.—December 25, 26. 27. . Southland.—December 25, 26. 27. Wellington'.—December 25,’. 26, 27, 28, 29. Canterburv. —December 26, 27, 28, 29. ' Nelson.—January 1,2, 3. Wanganui.—January 1; 2,3, 4. South Canterbury (South. Island Championships).—January 1,2. .3, (4. Auckland (Outer Suburban).—January 1,’2..5., ■ New Zealand Championships (Auckland).—January 23. 24, 25, 26, 28, 29. —Easter Dates.— Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, Wellington, and Tuapeka. Grade Competitions. The various grades of interclub competitions were advanced another stage last Saturday. The surprising feature of one of the matches in the Intermediate grade was that the final result showed matches and games to be.even, thus constituting what to the memory of most players is, an unknown- result in local matches—,a drawn game. The match in question was played between the Opohb and Roslyri Clubs, and the final score was 8 .matches, 1,11 games each. While the Roslyn . men won'four of their matches, the Opoho ladies evened the score. by gaining four, victories, while' each team won two mixed doubles. For Roslyn Allan and- Hughson and. for Opoho Miss Reilly won all their matches. _ ■ Balmacewen, the leading team in the intermediate grade, gained a close victory over St. Andrew’s by the odd match. The surprise of this match was Wright’s defeat of Grimsda-le by 9 games to -2. Wilkie (St. Andrew’s) played well in all his matches, and his defeat of M'Donald, 9-6, was a good effort. ' ' St. Kilda, the other undefeated, team in this grade, gained a good victory over Moana. by 10 matches to 6. The present indications are that: St. Kilda and Balmacewen will both be in the running for this shield, and as these two teams do not meet till ■ February 23 'next, interest in the grade will be well maintained. The folio wing, tables give the positions of the various teams in the grade competitions at the present time:—

Tables showing the relative positions of the teams in B 11., C 1., and C 11. grades will be published nest week. Notes. '■ The official opening of the Macahdrew Bay Club’s new courts was held .last Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of players and friends;. The association was officially represented by Mr A. T. Jensen (president) and several members of the executive; Two first-class courts have been laid down by this club, and they-compare more than favourably with ■ many of the town club courts. The courts have been laid in concrete and top-dressed with' emulsified bitumen, thus making for a lasting and permanent job. A strong St. Kilda team visited Milton last Saturday afternoon, and while the town team won fairly easily many of tbe games were evenly contested. The Milton Club’s sole victory was gained by Miss L. Vidal, who gave a good display to defeat Miss Edwards. 9-6. The St. Kilda Club is to be commended for sending a team as it is visits such as these that help to raise tbe standard of tennis in the country districts. _ It was noticed in at least one of the intermediate grade matches last Saturday at Logan Park that the members of one team did not put. in an appearance till 1.45. As these matches arc scheduled to commence at 1 o’clock the teanv whose members- were waiting would have been perfectly justified in claiming at least the first two men’s singles. Ladder Challenges. . Recent ladder challenges resulted Black and Bryan defeated Robertson and Pollock, 6-2, 6-3; Bryan beat E. Pea’rce/6-3," 6-3. ’

In-the Kaituna Club’s championship T. Callender gained a good victory when he defeated A. T. Jensen, ,6-5, 6-4.

The following challenges were played at Logan , Park last Tuesday evening: Boddy gained first place on .the singles ladder by defeating G. Pearce, C-3, 3-6, 6-4. This was one of the best matches seen at the park this season, and both players gave a good exhibition. There was very ’ little difference between the two players, Boddy proving himself slightly superior to his opponent in volleying, He also took every opportunity of getting in to the net. E. Pearce beat C. Robertson, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5; Rawlinson- beat Bryan, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0; Swallow beat- Philhpps, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Rawlinson struck a brilliant patch in the last two sets of his match against Bryan, and fully earned his victory. Union Notes. —A Grade.— Kensington v.. Aotea.—With eight sets'each, Aotea, by two games just managed to secure victory in a match that was oxciting as far as the final issue was concerned. Kensington men appeared to all have an off day—not one set being secured in this section. Lawrence had a good match to defeat Sherwood Sims, who has not produced form this season, was accounted for by J. Taylor. Sims ,is worth his place as a leader to his team. Booth secured a 'well-earned victory over Gibson. Although Brown defeated Wallace, a return match would possibly see the tables turned, d The Kensington ladies appeared to be a shade superior to the : Seasidera, although it must be said that the Aotea players have played much better games. Miss Williamson produced some brilliant shots in her match when defeating Miss M'Phail. Ravensbourne v, Knox.—Knox again proved that it is a side hard to defeat. Although gaining victory to the extent of 10 sets to 6, it is possible that the - scores would have been closer had Ravensbourne combined better -in mixed doubles. The play in this section on Saturday, is hard to understand considering that - Ravensbourne has always been noted for good combination in-mixed doubles. On the other hand, Knox appears to be combining better. Galbraith lost to H. Facer, in, a match that found the Ravensbourne player too fast for his opponent. Kaikorai v; Macandrew Road.—This match again proved that Kaikorai, although having lost some good players, is rapidly gaining form that will find it knocking at the door when championship honours' are being fought. Macandrew Road, although easily defeated, never let up, and some good games were witnessed.

In connection with the ladder matches, the Management Committee, at its meeting next Monday evening, will delete all from the Union ladder who have not played a challenge during tbe past month. The following results are to hand of challenges recently played :—Miss Thompson 9, Miss Mackie 2, Miss Howell 9, Miss Bullen 8, E. M'Kinnon 9, Davidson 7, Aderman 9, Sherwood 6. There will •be no A grade -matches next Saturday, and all matches will conclude this Saturday until January 12. Club secretaries are reminded that all results of club games must be forwarded to the Union secretary in time for the Management Committee meeting next Monday evening. Results of any ladder challenges not enumerated above must be forwarded to the secretary immediately. In next week’s notes positions of all grades will- be published. '
