(Received December 11, at 12.20 p.m.) The gendarmerie disclosed that the French assistant naval attache. Sublieutenant Tessier du Cros, was several times summoned and questioned with regard to alleged espionage activities. There have also been arrested and crossexamined a score of daughters and young wives of Japanese officials socially prominent and all proficient in French, with whom Du Cros allegedly established intimacy, then induced them to obtain secrets of naval strategy, descriptions of arsenals, etc. Du Cros travelled extensively in out of the way places, including fortifiedzones. The present disclosure is regarded as a counter blast to the Japanese espionage sensation at Singapore, which is prominently displayed in the Japanese P.ress.

Jt is reported that the police are closely watching an American naval officer who is frequenting cafes, also an American newspaper correspondent. The gendarmerie want to deport Du Cros, but are prevented by his diplomatic immunity.
