COMFORT IN THE SUMMER

PROTECTION FROM THE SUH BLINDS AND AWNINGS ADVISABLE Suitably chosen sun protection for the, home adds great attraction to the general appearance of the exterior and provides cool comfort for the inside. During the next few months it will ho essential, if you want comfort, for windows and verandahs exposed to the sun and weather to be fitted with blinds or awnings. If this has not already been done it is advisable to put awnings up as soon as possible. Actually awnings are not only desirable in summer, but also for protection from the weather all the year round. Closed against the cold winds and rain of winter months, your balcony or porch becomes an all-year-roundi living room.

The multi-coloured ducks used foi hjinds and awnings now so gay that they form a house decoration in themselves. Orange, blue, green, white, ami black are combined with delightful effects, while some of the newest designs show fancy stripings with varicoloured block and check patterns. Those who prefer the quieter hires are well catered for l in ducks of brown, blue, or green stripes on fawn grounds. Awnings may be fitted to almost any type of verandah, porch, or window, small or large. STRAIGHT DROP BLIND. A most popular kind of awning is the Florentine, which can be projected at any angle against the sun or lowered straight down and used as a weather blind. These are fitted on strong iron frames, finished with scalloped edges, and arc very simple to handle. Another kind known to most people is the straight drop weather blind, with a roller at the top, fitted with iron projecting arras to push the blind out from the base when wanted as a sun blind. Oriental awnings are perhaps one >1 the most -attractive of all—their circular shape giving the appearance of a canopy over porqlr or window. The well-made Oriental awning_ has at least six ribs, so that sagging is prevented, while each rib is separately hand sewn into a strip of duck to guard against dragging on the awning itself. They can be used as a decorative door canopy or adapted to fit very wide arches. ■ Do not, however, buy awnings and blinds indiscriminately. Even if you take the measurements yourself you will not be sure of obtaining blinds that fit properly.
