OTAGO CRICKET
ASSOCIATION'S MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN SATISFACTORY RESPONSE RECEIVED The Otago Cricket Association's around membership campaign, was reported to have been achieving very satisfactory progress at a meeting ot the committee last evening. The Chairman (Mr J. M. Fraser) said that already they had a total of 401 members, which was getting very near the mark at which they had-been aim:g. There was still a number of prospects which would add to the total. All these were the result of more or less free lance effort. It remained for them now to complete the# effort by means of special concentrated effort. Mr A. H. Allen "said that the fact that they had now secured. over 400 members merely confirmed his opinion that they could get the , 500 at which they were aiming. Ho would move that a. smaller committee,' comprising, say, ten members, be set up to make a special canvass. The original .committee could make a selection of the requisite number, and decide upon a particular policy. The meeting agreed to the appointment of a smaller committee, and discussed ways and means of further prosecuting the appeal. . The Chairman expressed keen appreciation of tho work of every member of the committee, and also many friends of the association who had helped them materially. He could say personally that it had been tho easiest collecting he- had ever done, and he had no doubt that they would accomplish what they had set out to do. CHARGES FOR GROUNDS. The Grounds Committee reported on a scale of charges for wickets agreed upon with the superintendent of city reserves (Mr D. Tannock). The agreement provided for a charge of £6 5s per wicket and £6O for Tonga Park. Mr W. Brookes said that some prhtest should he made" against the increased charges for grounds. The Chairman said that it was too late to do anything this year. The charges were fixed for the year, and the whole matter had been fully discussed by sports bodies, including their own. They might do something about it next year. lie thought that a good case could be made out of Tonga Park, however. The charge in respect of that ground was a heavy one considering that they would not have the. full use of the ground. The charge under such conditions was a heavy burden for the Cl Mr A. W. Sinclair moved that the matter of Tonga Park charges be referred by the Grounds Committee to the City’Council with a view to securing a rebate for the present season. It was moved as an amendment that the original committee which negotiated concerning the ground should approach the council in the matter. Another suggestion was that the chairman and Air Ferguson should comprise the deputation. . At this stage the meeting went into committee. . . It was finally agreed that the chairman, Dr Reid, and Mr Ferguson should discuss the matter with the reserves department. The Grounds Committee was instructed to make tho necessary arrangements for the provision of seats on certain grounds. GENERAL.
