AN APOLOGY TO OFFICIALS OF THE SEAMEN’S UNION, In our issue of September 15th, 1934, we published an article entitled ‘ The Reas* lionary Trade Union Official,’ by “Forward,” which contained the following state* ment:—“ Three officials of the Seamen’s Union interviewed the men in gaol and promised the strikers that ‘if they did not go back to Greymouth and man the ships, the Union would take steps to man the ships from Wellington.’ ” The article, which was written by A. B. Grant, over the pen name of “ Forward,’* was based on a statement that appeared in the issue of the Christchurch ‘Star’ of August 9th, 1934, Mr Grant now admits that he misquoted the Christchurch ‘ Star/ sucli misquotation having the effect of discrediting Messrs F. P. Walsh, W. Clarke, and T. Martin in the eyes of the membership of the Seamen’s . Union and. the Labour movement as a whole. We profoundly regret having published a statement so' obviously slanderou* and untrue. That it was so published was due to inadvertence and lack of super* vision during a period of extreme pressure of work. We have now ascertained that such statement had no . foundation in fact. W* offer our unqualified apology to Messrs F. P. Walsh, W. Clarke, and T. Martin, and the membership of the Federated Seamen’s Union of. New Zealand, and sincerely regret that our columns should have been used for the dissemination of a falsehood cal* culaled to prejudice them in the eyes of the working class and the general public.
