QUESTION OF FUEL ECONOMY TESTING OIL ENGINES (British Official Wireless.) Press Association-»-By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, November 14. Sir Philip Sassoon (Under-Secretary for Air), replying to a question in the House of Commons whether, in view of the need of very high fuel economy on Jong flights in the Empire mail services, steps were being taken to have a machine powered with an oil engine put into the service at an early date, said that the Air Ministry had for some time been taking an active part in the development of a heavy oil engine, one type of which had recently passed the flight test and flown successfully, and was now available for use by civil aviation. He was not prepared, however, to agree that Empire air mails could only be satisfactorily performed -by heavy oil engines. , General Smuts left Croydon for South Africa this .afternoon,.
