BOOKMAKER FINED £loo

POLICE SAYS BUSINESS EXTENSIVE “ He is an exceedingly honest and reputable citizen, and apart from this is a perfectly respectable man,” said Mr C. J. L. White on behalf of William Prince, who pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to a charge of keeping a common gaming house at 28 Bedford street. Chief-detective Young, who prosecuted, told the court that the facts were similar to those which had been placed before the court in a case last Monday. • Detective-sergeant Doyle and Detective Gibson visited defendant’s house at 12.20 p.m, on November 9, the day of the Metropolitan Trots, said Mr Young. The police entered by virtue of a warrant issued under the Gaming Act. After some delay they were admitted by the defendant, and the usual betting paraphernalia was found, but he succeeded in burning some papers. The police remained there for two hours during which between sixty and seventy calls were received on the telephone. A number of people lodged bets, but others became suspicious and rang off. The police had evidence that defendant bad done an extensive business.

Mr White said that the business had been conducted in a private house, and there had been no nuisance to the public. Prince paid his Government tax and unemployment tax. Defendant was fined £IOO and costs. The magistrate asked if time to pay were desired.

“No, he'll pav right away,” replied Mr White.
