TRANSPORT LICENSING
ND. 9 AUTHORITY SITS The No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority continued its sitting in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. ' James Butler, of Winton, who was represented by Mr J. P. Ward, applied for the cartage of pipes from Outram to the Deep Creek line. Mr P. S. Anderson appeared for ft number of objectors. The Chairman (Mr A. I. TV. TTood) stated that it was the policy of_ the board to grant licenses for Public Works and local body contracts, but Mr Anderson claimed _ that if this were done without hesitation persons could put :n unduly low prices for contracts, failing themselves and forcing persons who already had licenses out of business The Chairman stated that to impure into contract prices was not part of the function of the board. Mr Anderson submitted, however, that the policy of the board in granting licenses automatically was contrary to the spirit of the Act. the purpose of which was to protect those who were licensed to operate in certain, districts from unlicensed operators from outside. As those who were limited to a certain district had had restriction imposed upon them their licenses shou a be worth something to them. Actually the objectors had refrained from tendering for contracts outside their district. If a license was to be automatically granted for contracts, whac wa* the use of getting a continuous license.’ 1 , Mr Ward replied that what the applicant was doing was not in the nature of a service. It was most important that work of this kind should lie oppfl to contractors throughout New Zealand. Otherwise local bodies mipht.niid them* selves at the mercy of those who had licenses to operate in their district. Decision was reserved. B Adamson applied for an area license for a goods service between Camam and Kurow.—Mr Sumpter said tliat the applicant’s mail contract over the route would expire on December 31 and would he taken over by Mr G.
