ST. CLAIR ESPLANADE

EXTENSION. .Of SEA WALL SEATS REQUIRED FOR HEW PORTION The esplanade walk at St. Clair beacK is something of which the citizens of Dunedin are justly proud, and the extension which is being made to it at present should have the effect of making it even more popular and attractive. In the summer time, during the day and in the evenings, it is used by many hundreds of residents and visitors who enjoy a stroll in the sea air, with the pleasant prospect of sand and sea before their eyes, and the seats which flank the edge in front of the railing fence are always very popular. During the past year the Ocean Beach Domain Board has been engaged in extending the sea wall. The new portion from the side of the steps in front’ of the bathing pavilion to connect with the end of the existing wall at the foot of Forbury road is almost completed, the work of driving the last few piles now being in hand,.-The old wooden steps which gave access to the beach from that’position have been removed, and steps similar to those at the centre of the old esplanade will take their place. A start will soon ba ’ made with the roadway behind the new, portion of wall, and this work will ba completed before tho Christmas houdays.. *- , ~ Of some importance for the proper, completion of the work will be the provision of seats on the new .wall, these to be placed in similar position to those on the existing wall. The St. Clair Improvement Association, a body which in an unostentatious manner has done a great deal, for the amenities of the beach, has 'interested itself in the provision of seats, and out of its slender resources will probably be able ,to provide two or three. how. , ever, nine are required, and it is felt ' that this is an opportunity for- welldisposed citizens who take a pride ill the amenities of their town to help.' The seats may be more conveniently placed in position in the asphalt.while it is being put down on the new foot* way, and gifts of a seat or seats ivould make an admirable Christmas gift to tb(3 city. Later the Domain Board will pro. ceed with the extension the esplanade wall from the other side of tho bathing pavilion steps towards St* Kilda. The concrete piles for this por-' tion have already been made.
