THRILLING SEA DRAMA
SIX PEOPLE RESCUED FIVE MEN AND GIRL IN PERIL. Five men and a girl figured in a thrilling rescue drama in heavy seas at Fiamborough, Yorkshire, recently, during which crowds of holiday-makers saw file lifeboats go out. All six suffered from bruises and lacerations received on the rocks. Tho girl was admitted to a hospital and detained for an hour. _ The lifeboat was damaged through being dashed on to the rocks by heavy seas, and three oars wore smashed. The drama began when Mr C. Salisbury, of Bradford, saw a girl bather in difficulties, and dashed to her help with a rope, only to find himself in trouble in heavy seas, Seeing their plight, Mr Herbert Myers, Mr William Pickup, Mr Frank Brodic, and another man went to help with a rope, but got among the rocks. Tho girl and Mr Salisbury were dragged ashore through the surf by people on the beach. ft was impossible to reach the four men, who found themselves in great peril, stranded on the Scar up to their waists in water, with a flood tide running fast and threatening to sweep them away. Mr George Leng, coxswain of the lifeboat, stated afterwards: “In a few moments I had manoeuvred the lifeboat as near to the rocks as possible, and threw a line, which was caught bv two of the men, whom we dragged aboard the lifeboat. “ Just then a wave lifted the lifeboat bodily, and threw her down hard with her stern on the Scar. I dropped anchor and let the sea swing her clear, but again a wave caught her and lifted her bodily on to the Scar. _ As she swept by wc caught the remaining two men and dragged them aboard.”
