Dunedin Jockey Club

The heavy rain which fell during Friday afternoon and evening fortunately cleared oft early on Saturday morning, and the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting was held in bright sunshine and before a splendid attendance. The track suffered badly from the heavy rain, and was very soggy when the racing commenced, but the bright sunshine and a drying wind improved it as the afternoon progressed, but times were slow throughout the afternoon, and the Dunedin Guineas has only been run slower once since it was established twenty-two years ago. That was in 1917. when Kilrea won in Imiu 51 3-ssec.

. Though the fields were much smaller than is generally the case at this fixture, some good racing was witnessed, and a number of the finishes excitingly close. The race for the Dunedin Guineas was an uninteresting one, and it is many years since a field was so widely spread out at the end of a mile race at Wingatui. The heavy going appeared to upset these three-year-olds, and at the finish all but the winner .were very tired horses. The success of Tauramai was most unexpected, even by his own connections, and l he is the first Southland-bred horse to score* in this classic. He returned the biggest dividends, both win and place, paid out at the meeting. Mr M'lvor’s starting was again uniformly good, and the only_ field that gave any trouble at the barier was in the two-year-old race. Punctuality was again closely observed, and the general management of the meeting reflected credit on honorary and stipendiary officials alike. The totalisator returns for this meeting were the best the club has recorded since 1930, as the following comparisons will show:— Ist dav. 2nd dav. Total. £ £ £ 1934 ... 7,999 13,433} 21,432}' 1933 ... 7,161} 12,153} 19,315 1932 ... 7,000 10,634} 17,634} 1931 ... 9,063} 8,416 17,479} 1930 ... 13,603 10,169 23,772 The following are the concluding results: — RANFURLY HANDICAP, luOsovs; second 22, third 8. There was no change in this order until racing round the far turn, where Red Racer -was one and a-half lengths in front of The Smuggler, Palermo, Steeton, and Water Power racing in close order. Totolomai moved up racing up the rise, but Red Racer led into the straight from Palermo, Steeton, Prince Val, and Totolomai.
