STEAMERS IN DISTRESS
THE AIHDEHBT AND THE HILLPOOL ONE SAVED, DUE LOST (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, October 6. (Received October 8, at noon.) After several days of uncertainty as to the fate of the freighter Ainderby, which was badly damaged during a terrific gale in the North Atlantic, the owners received a message from the master stating that the situation was well in hand and that no assistance was required. Ho hoped to make the Bristol Channel on Tuesday. The search for the Millpool has been abandoned. It is presumed that the vessel, with her crew of twenty-six, was lost in the gale which crippled the Ainderby. [The British freighter, Millpool (4,218 tons) was bound from Danzig to Montreal. The last position given by her was 700 miles off the coast of Labrador. Ships rushed to assist when the S.O.S. was sent out, but no trace of her was found. The Cunard liner Antonio and the British cargo steamer Thematon stood by the, Ainderby (4,860 tons), which was carrying coal from Swansea to Montreal, and which was hove-to 1,500 miles east of New York with her hatches smashed by huge waves. A young apprentice was washed overboard and lost.]
