MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Caverslram Lodge was held in the lodge hall, Forbnry Conter, on Wednesday weniug, N.G. Bro. J. Adam presiding ovea 1 a good muster of members. Letters were received from a number of lodges thanking the lodge lor invitation to be present at this meeting. One funeral claim was passed for payment. It. was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Bro. Mooney. Reports were received from the delegart.es to the Picnic Committee regarding arrangements for the Oddfellows’ picnic. The report of the delegates who atteaided the recent District Meeting were held over until next Ipdgc night. At an early hour the lodge adjourned in order to entertain lodges renting the hall. Members of toe following lodges were introduced by P.P.G.M. Bro. La wry and welcomed by the N.G.: —Court St. Andrews £A-0-E-). Royal Oak (Druids), Star tyf Caversham (Orange Lodge). and Princess Mary Lodge. Tho evening took the form of a progressive euchre tomrnament. The prize winners were Sister A. M. Jackson and Christenson, of the Orange Lodge. Bro. W. Caanprbell, Court St. Andrew’s Lodge, annexing the men’s trophy. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing till nvidnight. During an interval representatives of the visiting lodges returned thanks for a very enjoyable evening. Prior to adjourning the ordinary meeting Permanent Secretary Bro, J. List was asked to make a presentation to P.G. Bro. Russell from a few of his fellowmembers. Bro. List paid tribute to Bro. Russell’s many services for tho lodge, stating that he had been a member for 43 years, and had represented the lodge on the Dispensary Committee for the last twenty years. 'He had also taken an active interest in the work of the Juvenile Lodge, being on the first committee of that lodge. Bro. Russell suitably acknowledged Hie presentation. The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Centenary Lodge, held on Monday evening, was presided over by N.G. Bro. J. Preston, a fair muster of members being in attendance. Tfiie delegates submitted a report on business transacted at the Oamaru District Meeting, and were accorded a heartyvote of thanks for their services. Appreciative reference was inade to the good work done by Bro. Jones on the social side of the lodge’s activities, amj the N.G. conveyed the thanks of the lodge to Bro. Jones. After business had been transacted the lodge adjourned and a table tennis tou'rmament was staged. Bro. M'Allan proving the winner, with Bro. Rosevear second.

The Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the Council Chambers. Lawrence, on Tuesday evening, with a good attendance of officers and members, presided over by N.G. Bro. Simpson. One new member was initiated. An invitation was received to attend the annual ball of the Loyal Tapanui Lodge. Cfxrrespondence was lengthy, main’ letters being received from members now residing out of the district. P.G. Bro. Gate gave au interesting account of the business transacted at the District Meeting, held at Oamaru, and the secretary reported attending a conference of secretaries and trustees of lodges re the district and lodge funds. Both delegates expressed appreciation of the cordial manner in which delegates had been received and treated in Oamaru. Permanent Secretary Bro. Cooper, of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge, being specially- mentioned. Following a discussion on' the District Meeting the lodge closed with the usual formalities.

The monthly meeting of Loyal Tapauui Lodge, held on Thursday evening last, attracted a large attendance of members, Bro. A. Fleming in the chair. The lodge was in mourning for the late Bro. James Isteed, and a motion of sympathy with his widow and family was passed, the members, standing in silence for a few moments. The secretary was instructed to forward letters of sympathy to P.G. Bro. D. M'Coll, of Timaru, Bro. A. Winslade, and Bro. W. Isteed, on their recent bereavements. 'A hearty welcome was extended to P.G. Bro. J. L. Wylie after a long absence through sickness. One new member was initiated. The N.G. extended to P.G. Bro. Peter Thomson birthday greetings, and referred to the good work he had done for the lodge during his residence in Tapauui, especially in visiting the sick members; an he voiced the regret of all at Ids departure. On behalf of the members he expressed the very best wishes of all to Mr and Mrs Thomson for the future. Several members spoke in similar strain, and extended good wishes. Bro. Thomson suitably responded. One proposition for membership was received. 'The Ball Committee reported that arrangements for the annual ball of the lodge were satisfactorily completed. The official visit of sister lodges to the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge on Tuesday evening was a most successful function. over 180 members of the order being present in the Mosgiel Lodge Hall. The attendance was representative of all the city and suburban lodges, while a contingent- of members from the two Milton lodges made the trip. The N.G. of the Loyal Mount Wendon (AVaikain! Lodge, and a member of the Loyal Winton Lodge (Southland) were also among the visiting brethren. The District Executive was represented bv four members—P.G.M. Bro) A. ‘L. Hart. P.D.G.M. Bro. J. D. Cameron, and P.P.G.M.’s Bros. Jack and Johnston. The N.G. of the Mosgiel Lodge, Bro A. Chadwick, who presided, in welcoming the visiting brethren, express gratification at the large attendance, and said that it was a long time since they had had such a large gathering in the local lodge hall. After representatives of (he various visiting lodges had responded to the visitors' toast Hm members of the executive acknowledged the toast of the district officers. P.G.M. Bro. Hart thanked members for their welcome, and congratulated the lodge on its successful visit. Bro Cameron. P.D.G.M.. said that the district officers had visited Mosgiel some time ago, and they were pleased to see the progress the lodge had made since that time. Bros.. Johnston and Jack also responded, the former (who is acting district treasurer) stating that P.P.G.M. Bro A, Sligo would bo returning to Dunedin shortly to take up bis former office. The business meeting of the lodge having been concluded, the lodge was adjourned, and a very fine programme was enjoyed by all present. Those contributing were the Misses Melrose (solos and duets!. Miss M‘Donald (niano solos), Mr W, Finnic, and Bro. M'Farlane (songs!. \t (he close of the programme the N.G. conveyed the thanks, of all present to those Indies and gentlemen who had provided such an enjoyable programme. Following supper dancing was continued until midnight to the music of Bro. Blaekie. both the visiting and local members spending a happy evening.

chief business of the evening was the report of the lodge delegates to the half-yearly district meeting at Oamarn. The delegates stated that the meeting was an interesting one. and although scheduled for two days, the business had been dealt with expeditiously, and full consideration given to the various matters on the business paper. The efforts of the Loyal Oamarn Lodge in entertaining the delegates were very favourably conmmented on all arrangements for the meeting being excellent. A feature of the social side was a trip to the Waitaki Hydro works on the Saturday afternoon. The next meeting of the District Committee is to be hold in Dunedin, under the auspices of the Loyal Dunedin Lodge. A letter is to be sent to the Loyal Oamarn Lodge congratulating it on the manner in which the meeting and functions connected therewith were carried out. The N.G. and V.G. reported representing the lodge at the anniversary celebrations of the Loyal Dalton (Balclutha Lodge). Both the delegates to the district meeting and the latter function were accorded a vote of thanks. The lodge adjourned at an early hour, and members and lady friends were the guests of P.G. Bro. J, Carrington and Mrs Carrington at a progressive euchre evening. An enjoyable time was spent, and at tlie close of the tournament prizes wore presented by Bro. Carrington to Mrs E. Longworlh and Bro. N. Macallistcr. The X.G. expressed the thanks of the lodge to Bro. and Mrs Carrington for their hospitality, and before dispersing three hearty cheers were given for the hosts.
