TEN GEYSERS PLAY

SPECTACULAR THERMAL ACTIVITY [Pu United Press Association.] ROTORUA, September 26. The greatest display of thermal activity seen at Rotorua for a number of years took place to-day, when no fewer than ten gevserS at Whakarewarewa played at different times during the day. The Pohutu geyser sent up thirteen spectacular shots during the morning and afternoon, the water rising nearly 100 ft during the early shots and gradually becoming less during the afternoon. This is the third occasion during the winter that Pohutu has played after lying practically dormant for a considerable period. At one period Waikorohihi, Waikite. Pohutu, and the Prince of Wales Feathers geysers were all playing practically simultaneously, presenting a most spectacular sight. In addition the Takuhu geyser in the Native reserve, which has been quiescent for the past two years, sent up shots of mud and water to a height of over 20ft, while two smaller geysers adjacent to it also showed signs of activity. The Kereru geyser, near Pohutu, also played on several occasions during the day, while the Papakura geyser was playing continuously. It is generally believed that the. higher level of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti, which have been 15 to 18finches higher during the winter than in previous years, is stimulating thermal activity around the lake shores. Among the interested crowd of spectators gathered at Whakarewarewa was a party of English tourists, who are spending two days here before going on to Melbourne.
