SPEECH TO THE QUEEN

TRAMWAY WORKER'S WIFE The proudest person present in a crowd at a fete at Ongar, Essex, the other day was a tram conductor’s wife, who made a speech to the Queen. She was Mrs Whitworth, whose husband lives at Wandsworth. As a member of the Transport and General Workers’ Union Women’s Guild, Mrs Whitworth returned thanks to the Queen after Her Majesty had received more than fifty purses for the extension of the Mary Mac Arthur Holiday Home for Working Women, at The Gables, Ongar. . , , , The presenters of the purses included working women, members of various trade unions, and representatives of firms who have contributed to the Home Extension Fund. Mrs Whitworth, thanking the Queen, said: “I have benefited very much personally, in health, by a stay at tlio home when I was sorely in need of a change, and there are many women like myself who have reason to be thankful for a holiday iu these lovely surroundings.” Mrs Whitworth spoke in a clear voice without a trace of nervousness, and the Queen smiled at her and bowed as she concluded. “ The Queen’s smile put me at my ease at once,” declared Mrs Whitworth, after the ordeal.
