SENSATIONAL TRIALS
THE WOMEN IK HIS LIFE s Out of the yellow pages of American metropolitan newspapers a dramatic story has been rescued for the screen that promises to be one of the fastest, exciting, and thrill-crowded chronicles of modern metropolitan life to be transcribed into a motion picture. The picture is ‘ The Women In His Life,’ which comes to-morrow to the St. James Theatre. In reality it is a composite of many true stories of rapid-pulse life, for it is a well-seasoned mixture of many acarehead yarns that have screamed from the front pages of newspapers in tail black letters. It is the story of sensational trials; of life behind the scenes of the courtrooms and attorneys’ offices; of a spectacular trial lawyer who always wins the cases for his clients, be they guilty or innocent, but who lets a woman of his past wreck hia future. Otto Kruger is the lawyer who rises to great heights in the legal profession, only to be beset by disgrace. He was awarded this difficult rote because of his fine stage performances in many plays with a legal background, his most recent one being ‘ Counsellor at Law,’ which was filmed with John Barrymore in the lead. Una Merkel, favourite of many former screen successes, is cast in the role of Kruger’s secretary, Simmie. Ben Lyon, as Kruger’s junior law partner, Roger M’Kane, makes his first appearance under his new Metrq-Gold-wyn-Mayer contract in the picture. Isabel Jewell, who will be remembered as the snippy reception clerk in ‘ Beauty For Sale,’ plays Kruger’s sweetheart. Roscoe Karns, veteran character comedian, fills out the list of principals. The supporting group of players fa headed by Irene Hervey, who played Franchot Tone’s wife in ‘ The Stranger’s Return.’ In the new picture she is seen as Doris Worthing, whose father is saved from the electric chair by a sacrifice on the part of Kruger. The cast also includes 0. Henry Gordon, Samuel S. Hinds, Irene Franklin, Muriel Evans, Raymond Hatton, Jean Howard, and Paul Hurst.:
