STORY OF MODERN PARIS

' FASHION GAIETIES 1 FOR ST. JAMES Frocking that will delight every feminine heart is gorgeously displayed in ‘ Fashion Gaieties of 1934,’ which will commence its Dunedin . season at the St. James Theatre on Friday. But the film is not for women only. With its absorbingly interesting plot, amusing comedy, and magnificent spectacles, the picture should prove entertaining to all.

Having for its background such places as Ciros, the llitz, the Folies Bergeres, and the Eiffel Tower, this story of modern Paris deals with the activities of dress designers, dress merchants, dress fakers, and mannequins. William Powell gives a fine performance as Sherwood Nash, a suave, highpressure promoter, who would like to establish a corner in fashion designs. Playing opposite to him is the charming Bette Davis, who takes the role of Lynn, his fellow conspirator. Her rival is the woman who masquerades as the Grand Duchess Alix, a part splendidly acted by Verreb Teasdale. Most of the comic relief is provided by Hugh Herbert, who has been breeding ostriches for years, waiting for feathers to become fashionable again, and Frank M'Hugh, who picks the pockets of “ gold-diggers ” as he kisses them good-bye. Hobart Cavanagh is very funny in his short appearance as the man who is trying to sell Nash an idea for making luminous gowns by crossing glow worms and silk worms.
