SPEEDY MEDICAL INSPECTION. A new method-of giving an arriving ship her medical clearance was tried when the Monterey reached Auckland recently from Sydney. Through passengers were not required . to fill m forms or present their passports ior examination, and this enabled the Customs examinations to be carried out in about onc-ihird the time. formerly taken. To assist the Customs Department the company availed itself of the new Health Department regulation which entitles the ship’s surgeon, on vessels arriving from Australia, to carry out

the medical examination and assure the port health officer that the ship is .clear (states the Auckland ‘ Star’). On the vessel’s arrival the official medical inspection of the ship took less than five minutes, and consisted of the signing of a few papers. There were 290 through passengers and ninety landing. With only the latter to deal with Customs officials completed their examination in about twenty minutes. By 7 o’clock, half an hour after the Monterey came alongside, passengers were coming ,off, thankful that they had been saved unnecessary red tape and form-filling. The. experiment will be repeated when the Monterey returns from America, and if it is found satisfactory both ways then the scheme will be extended to all overseas ships. Mr E. J. Hewitt, of Henderson and Macfarlane Limited, the local agents for the- Matson Line, r.aid that the reduction in the time of the Customs examination and the abolition of the medical examination would be a great help to Auckland. Through passengers’ would be especially grateful at nob Laving to get up in the early hours of the morning to present themselves before the authorities. The innovation* would have a great advertising value to Auckland, and it-was hoped that it would become permanent. ■ • The boarding inspector at Auckland, Mr W. H. Graham, said that special permission from the Minister had been obtained to try the experiment. It would only be tried on certain ships until the'scheme had been proved. Auckland was the only port that was trying the scheme. He did not think that it would save much time, as a smaller staff would be employed. _ ihe main consideration was the convenience of the passengers. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
