BENCH AND BAR

TRIBUTES TO FORMER JUDGE LATE HOH. W. C. MACGREGOR [Per United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, August 29. Tributes to the memory or the late Hon. W. C MacGregor, a former member of the Judicial Bench, were pajd by Bench and Bar at a gathering in the Supreme Court this morning. There was a large attendance, and the tributes paid were eloquent of the esteem in which the late judge was held. On the Bench were Chief Justice Myers and Judges Ostler, Blair, and Smith, and Sir Frederick Chapman (a former judge). Among those present were five sisters of the late judge, the Minister of Justice (Mr Cobbe), Mr Page, S.M., Mr Bishop (of the Justice Department’s head office), and Mr D. G. A. Cooper (a former magistrate and Registrar of the Supreme Court). In the course of his appreciation Sir Michael Myers said that a stern lover of truth, Mr Justice MacGregor upheld during his distinguished career at the Bar the best traditions of the profession, and during his term of office as judge all the traditions of the British judiciary were safe in his just and upright hands. Sir Michael Myers said he had received a message from Mr Justice Reed (who was absent through an attack of influenza) joining in the sentiments caressed on behalf of the judges. Mr H. F. O’Leary spoke on behalf of the Law Society, and Mr T. C. A. Hislop on behalf of the Wellington District Law Society.
