STRAY DOGS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —This frequently recurring subject has again been raised. When are we to be nd of these canine nuisances? When are our city by-laws to be enforced? Lest I bo accused of having no liking for animals, let mo state that, on the contrary, I am very fond of them, but I maintain that a city is no place for dogs, particularly the larger varieties. It is surely cruel and unfair to have these animals cooped up in small spaces. To motorists dogs which fly out at them are a continual source of annoyance, and, more than that, they constitute a positive menace and danger on the highway. Accidents arising from a dog’s unexpected bound at a motor car are by no means rare. Most small children, too, are very much afraid of dogs. Quite recently a little boy, on his way home from school at lunch time, requested me to escort him to the gate, as there was a dog prowling about a short distance away. It is not a fair thing that children should receive frights through stray dogs. Finally, stray dogs make our city filthy and insanitary. Round the fence on the top side of the Girls’ High School grounds there is each morning an unsightly and disgusting mess caused by these errant canine creatures.

it is high time that an end was put to this nuisance. I would suggest that the only effective remedy is to have regular round-ups, when all stray dogs would bo caught and destroyed. The so-called dog lovers who value their animals would then soon take care to see that their pets were kept under proper control.—l am, etc., August 28. Samtas,
