HIBERNIAN DEBATING CLUB
The half-yearly general meeting of the Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club was held recently, when the president; Mr A. Gillick, presided. The annual report stated that the club’s financial position had considerably improved. The reduction in subscription had been justified by results, this year’s receipts from this source exceeding those of last year. Receipts for the half-year were £l9 14s 3d and expenditure £l7 19s lid. For the previous half-year the figures had been £3? 7s 9d and £26 6s 2d respectively. The president commented on the increases in receipts, and referred to the financial benefit it derived from the lecture given by Mr J. J. Kennedy and the donation of Bishop Whyte.- Interclub debates and billiard evenings had been held with the North-east Valley and St. Patrick’s Social Clubs. He returned thanks to the retiring, executixe for their co-operation during his term of office, and to the judges who had officiated at the various debates. The election of office-bearers resulted President, Mr A. Gillick; vicepresident, Mr W. E. Dawkins; secretary, Mr J. Quinn; treasurer, Mr T. J. Boyle; auditor, Mr F. R. Thompson : committee—Messrs F. G. Brown, E. DAwkins, H. ami J. K. Dolan, J. Lauren, and P. and W. M'Alevey. The Club Captain (Father Hanrahan) addressed the meeting, and suggested that during prepared speech evenings the lives of great men should be given. The Rev. Dr Klimeck asked for tho club's support in the nomination of a queen for the coming queen carnival to be held in liquidation of the parish debt.
