FARM MORTGAGES
CONSIDERATION PROMISED [Pkr United Press Association.] ELTHAM, May 18. A defiite undertaking that the Dairy Commission would consider farm mortgages was given by the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) to a deputation of 400 farmers this morning. The deputation put forward tho view that the order of reference might not cover the question of mortgages. Tho farmers, particularly in Taranaki, were reaching the end of their resources and felt that mortgages should bo tackled. They did not care what stops were taken so long as they were effective. It was suggested that the Adjustment Commission’s powers should bo widened. Many farmers who might leave their farms were highly efficient. The farmers wanted security of tenure. Mr Forbes said tho Government fully realised the importance of the question which was covered by the order of reference. The farmers had ample opportunity for placing evidence before the commission. Each case was treated on its merits.
Mr Forbes, in the course of a lengthy reply, said that no Government haa done more for the farmers, who should remember that there were mortgages on property other than farms.
