His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy returned from Invercargill this morning. Professor Shelley returned to Christchurch by train to-day. Mr E. C. Hands, general manager of tho Broadcasting Board, left Dunedin this morning for Wellington. Miss M. Magill, president of the New. Zealand Educational Institute, was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.35 train to-day. Mr George Stewart, railways publicity manager, left Dunedin for Wellington, by the mail train this morning. Mr J. M. Paterson returned to-day. from Invercargill-by train. • -Mr H. Coxhead travelled from Dunedin to Timaru by the 11.35 train today.

A Loudon cable stales that Dr Porritt, the well-known ex-Otago and New; Zealand athlete, has been elected to the International Olympic Committee. Mr H. J. Kersey, •an exchange teacher from Queensland, was welcomed, by Mr D. Forsyth, president of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, at the annual meeting yesterday. He asked Mr Kersey to convey a message of goodwill to the Iteachqrs of Queensland, and in reply Mr Kersey returned the good_ wishes of the Queensland Teachers’ Union. Mr J. Douglas Perrett, artist, of Auckland, returned to Dunedin from Invercargill yesterday afternoon, and will remain here for some time.

Dr A. J. Williams, formerly of Otago University, and holder of a post-gradu-ate travelling scholarship in science of. the University of New Zealand, has been appointed to the geological survey of British Guiana.

Miss Joyce Pringle (Mosgiel), who has been appointed to the Alexandra District High School staff, left this morning for Central Otago to take up her duties. The Rev. J. N. Sanson, of North. Taieri Presbyterian Church, left this morning for Timaru. He will spend a fortnight at a special course of evangelical studies there. During his absence North Taieri will be ministered to by students from Knoi; College. Tho following resolution was* adopted at the annual meeting of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute last, night:—“ That this meeting tenders to Professor D. R.White and Mrs White heartiest congratulations on their having celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding. It trusts that Professor White and Mrs White will continue to enjoy many years of health and happiness.’’ Professor White was president of the branch in 1888 and was the first elected life member.

Consequent on the death of Mr Cecil W. Palmer, managing director of the Fluenzol and Q-tol Proprietary Ltd., Mr W. H. Stevens, who has acted as director and manager for the past eight years, has been appointed to the position of, managing director. Mr J., R. Kirk, M.8.E., has been appointed chairman of directors, while Mr Will Appleton has joined the board as a director.

At the Christchurch Competitions Society’s festival bn Thursday Mr Fred Taplin (Dunedin) gained first place in the men’s sacred solo. _ Miss Hazel M'Guire’s performance in the recitation from a New Zealand author was very highly , commended, and ■ Miss Margaret Hawden (Port Chalmers)' was awarded first place in the operatio or dramatic solo for contralto voices.' In the junior recitation for boys, Ivan Templeton (Dunedin), secured second place. At a meeting of directors of the Fluenzol and, Q-tol Proprietary Ltd., held, on Wednesday last, the • following resolution was passed, members- of‘ the board standing in silence:— ,f That this board places upon record' its marked sense of loss in, the death of the founder of the company, Mr Cecil Watson i Palmer, its cordial appreciation of His valuable services over a long period of years, and its sincere sympathy with his widow and relations in the loss they have sustained.’’ Latest arrivals at the City Hotel are Mr T.
