DAIRY NEGOTIATIONS

BRITAIN'S REPLY RECEIVED SAID TO CONTAIN “ NO REASSURING FACTOR " [Special to the ‘ Stab.’J WELLINGTON, May 8. A recent cablegram from the New Zealand Government to the Home authorities raised the suggestion that negotiations might be opened regarding the marketing of dairy produce, particularly in view of the policy which will be adopted following the termination of the Ottawa Agreement. The Government has received an answer from the English Government, but-its text is not available for publication at present. It was gathered in Ministerial circles that the communication will provide no new or reassuring factor in the situation, as it constitutes a reiteration of the policy already clearly expressed. The meat quotas under the Ottawa Agreement are now under review. New Zealand, in common with other countries exporting to England, is required to submit estimates of quantities for. the coming year, and these are being compiled in respect of beef, pork, mutton, and lamb, and will be submitted to the British authorities by the New Zealand High Commissioner and Mr Forsyth, the London manager of the New Zealand Meat Board. The members of the Dairy Commission held a preliminary meeting today, and had an interview with the Prime Minister and Mr Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture.
