(Received May 4, at 1.20 p.m.) In the Dunlop golf tournament sixtynine players with aggregates of 154 or under qualified for the final two rounds. Paclgham is leading with 140. Next come Lacey (142), . Rudd, Mitchell, Branch, and M'Dowall (143), Cotton and Ayton (144). Others include R. Whitcombe (145), Compston, C. Whitcombe, Hodson, and Brews (146), E. Whitcombe (147), Havers and Easterbrook (148), Seymour (149), Alliss (150), Boomer, King, and Davies (153). To-day’s play at Southport produced a great surprise. Cotton on Wednesday was quite out of the running. To-day Cotton and Ayton, a fifty-year-old Scotsman,. formerly prominent at St. Andrews, tinst as an amateur, then as a professional, played together. Each had a round of sixtysix, breaking the record for the 6,800 yd course. Ayton took only twenty-five putts and Cotton twenty-six. CANTERBURY DOWNPOUR [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 4. Exceedingly heavy rain fell in Canterbury overnight, costinuing steadily all day. Most rivers are rising, but the only serious damage reported is from a spot fourteen miles north of Kaikoura, where the approaches to a bridge on the Main road were washed away. Car passengers have to cross the gap on foot to relief cars. Further slips are expected. DUNEDIN RAINFALL NO DAMAGE REPORTED The steady downpour which began yesterday morning had not resulted in any damage up' to the time the ‘ Star ’ went to press. The city area is free of any surface water, though in the low-lying areas around the flat the water has not been able to get away, and small lakes have been formed. The total fall for the twenty-four hours from 9 o’clock yesterday morning till the same hour to-day was .68in. LOWER GRADE RUGBY POSTPONED All third, fourth, and fifth grade Rugby matches for to-morrow have been postponed. The Match Committee will make a decision at 10.30 a.in. to-morrow as to the playing of the first and second grade matches. (Received May 4, at 11.5 a.m.) In the singles quarter finals of the Eastbourne tennis tournament Crawford defeated Boussus, 1-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4; Kirby defeated M'Grath, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1; Perry defeated Miki, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. ■ in the fourth round of the women’s singles Miss Round defeated Miss Whittingstall, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; Miss Stammers defeated Miss Dearman, 7-9, 7-5, 6-2. 11l the mixed doubles Sharpe and Miss Pearman defeated Hopman and Mrs Hopman, 8-6, 3-6, 6-3. The mixed doubles second round play resulted ; Stedman and Miss M'Alpine defeated Kirby and Miss Heeley, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3; Malfroy and Miss Stammers defeated Peters and Mrs Peters, 8-6, 6-3. In the third round of the doubles Perry and Lee defeated Kirby and Miki, 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3; Boussus and Merlin defeated Mishimura and Kamagishi, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2. M'Grath never settled down against Kirby’s topspin drives. M'Grath’s backhand was bad. Kirby said he had never played better; everything went right. Boussus was very steady against Crawford, but the Australian was superior in the last two sets.
