When the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s chartered turbine steamer Canonesa was lying in the Wanganui roadstead last Wednesday a heavy southerly gale made it necessary for her to put out to sea, and while her port anchor was being hove in the heavy steel casting supporting the “ gipsy ” and the main gearing of the port windlass broke. The broken part, weighing a ton or more, was dragged forward about 6ft, and a moment later was pulled over the cable compressor, finally coining to rest over the top of the hawse pipe, about 12ft forward of its original position. The gears and hearings of the windlass were considerably damaged, but the starboard section of the windlass escaped injury. In order to take the strain off the port anchor, the cable of which had bv that lime run out, Captain W. H. Brodie ordered the Canonesa to go ahead, and wires were shackled on to the cable. The weather conditions had grown worse, however, and it was decided to slip the anchor and cable, after having buoyed them, the Canonesa then proceeding out to sea. Very bad weather was experienced that day and on Thursday, but on Friday the ship was able to return to Wanganui, where she moored in the road--stead with her starboard anchor. At Wanganui the chief officer, Mr S. Matthews, went ashore and obtained the services of the Wanganui Harbour Board’s tug, and dragging operations were begun for the 74cwt anchor and the 150 fathoms of cable which had been slipped. On the second drag the Canonesa’s cable was hooked, and, in spite of its great weight, -was lifted so that a Sin wire could he passed round it and spliced on. On Saturday morning the Canonesa hove up her starboard anchor, and, after careful preparations had been made, lifted it on to the forecastle head, the cable having been disconnected so that the starboard hawse-pipe was loft free. The cable which hyd been slipped was then picked up through the starboard hawse pipe and hove in with the windlass.
The Canonesa proceeded to Wellington on Saturday with both anchors stowed on the starboard bow. The damaged portion of the windlass will be repaired in Wellington, VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
