SWIMMING
M'GLASHAN COLLEGE SPORTS The annual swimming sports of John M'Glashan College were held at the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon, and although the times returned were slow the standard was higher than was the case last year, and more important than, the returning of fast times was the fact that many of the competitors showed very promising style. This was particularly the case among some of the younger boys, and with coaching and training it should not be long before much faster times are being recorded by boys of the college. Although no school championship was decided several events were swum off for the M'Lean Cup, which is awarded to the form gaining most points in the championship races. This was won by Va. with 17 points, Vb. being runners-, up with 11, and VI. third with 4. D. Foord proved one of the most versatile competitors at the meeting, and E. Stevenson and J. H. M'Lean also shaped well in the cup events. During‘the afternoon the New Zealand 50yds record-holder, W. J. Jarvis, who holds the swimming championship of the Otago Boys’ High School, gave an exhibition of free-style, breaststroke, and back-stroke swimming, and was loudly applauded for his efforts. ■Mr P. A. Mathieson, of the baths staff, gave an instructive display of fancy swimming, and A. Williams (ex-New Zealand intermediate diving champion) and his; brother, N. Williams, gave a good display of fancy diving. At the conclusion of the meeting the principal (Mr C. M. Gilray) thanked those who had given displays. Results: — CUP EVENTS. 33 1-3 YARDS.
