FOR DISTRESSED JEWS
iii HOME IN ANGOLA TV APPROVED BY PORTUGAL • British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. , 11UGBY, April 28. The ‘Daily Herald ’ says: “Preliminary discussions, which have been proceeding Tor several months, ha\e resulted in the Portuguese Government approving of large-scale Jewish settlement in "Angola (West Africa). Prominent British politicians, including Srr John Simon, are interested in the scheme, and Portugal has been assured that no British objections will be raised. Jews may be drawn from Germany, Poland, Austria, and Rumania. .It is possible that 5,000,000 now living in hardship and uncertainty will bo finally affected. American organisations for the relief of Jewish distress are prepared to advance £2,000,000 towards the scheme. The sponsors hope that it will even be possible to establish an autonomous Jewish State under the League of Nations, though the Portuguese Government is at present unwilling to accept the League’s overlordship and expects the settlers to accept Portuguese citizenship.”
