MUSICAL GEMS INCLUDED
‘ GOING CAY ’ A FINE COMEDY Magda Schneider, the operatic star who will be remembered tor her delightful performance in ‘ Tell Me Tonight,’ but in which piece she did not get an opportunity to use her beautiful singing voice, has recently been given her*big chance in the Windsor-Sterling musical comedy ‘ Going Gay,’ which will bo shown at the St. James Theatre on Friday. In addition to being heard in the original compositions of ‘ Going Gav,’ Miss Schneider will also demonstrate her real operatic ability in excerpts from ‘ La Belle Helene ’ (Offenbach) and ‘ The Daughter of the Regiment ’ (Donizetti). Arthur Riscoe and Nannton AVayuc, first-iiight comedians, are the funmakers of the piece. They are the celebrated English comedians who entertained New Zealanders with J. C. AA’illiamson’s company some years ago, and who are now playing in a different sphere. Especially chosen to play the comedy part of Jack and Jim in ‘ Going Gay,’ they are credited with “ giving performances that definitely place them in tho front rank of screen comedians.” In addition to authentic exteriors made on location in Vienna, a number of elaborate sots were built for ' Going Gav ’ at the British and Dominion studios at Borehani AA r ood, including a magnificent courtyard surrounded by a block of fiats 60ft high and 50ft across, which was an exact reproduction of a building in Vienna. Some of the most important sequences in the picture were shot against this background, and it proved a- delightful setting for a display of ballet dancing arranged by Miss Wilma Vanne, and the singing of a large chorus under the direction of Hughes M.acklin.
