HOMES IN THE SUBURBS

AN IMPROVED MARKET FEW HOUSES TO LET While the purchasing market for suburban homes is strong iu Dunedin, property agents are finding the utmost difficulty in securing houses to let, according to a prominent Dunedin land and estate agent, who was interviewed by “ Cornice,” During'the last few months, he said, there had been a marked tendency towards an improved market for suburban homes. Sellers, however, realised that they could not expect to receive the boom prices of some years ago, for the price was largely governed by tbe replacement value. Building sites to-day were a little easier in price and the actual cosfs of suburban homes were lower. Anyone selling a home for reasons of change of locality, or a desire to have a larger or smaller house, would not actually lose on the transaction. because he, in turn, could buy at the attractive market now offering. Houses to let were in an entirely different category, he said- H was most difficult to secure suitable properties commensurate with the demand, and there was no doubt that an acute shortage existed. Bungalows were in particularly strong demand, and the difficulty was to satisfy the number ol prospective tenants. This position, he added, hac| been brought about partly by economic conditions and partly by the general 'inactivity of the building trade during the past few years.
