Mr' Stanley Bruce, the High Commissioner, has been; asked- to “ please explain” why he booked a passage to America by the Monterey,- a foreignoWned ship,' when, to be true to his own principles,, he might have travelled by the Aorangi. His action has been criticised" by a, section of the Press and by the Marine Stewards’ Union. > Mr .Bruce has 1 sent, a letter to the union explaining that his eleventh-hour visit to Brisbane-prevented him from travelling by the Aorangi; therefore, in order to be back in London early in June, he was compelled to travel by the Monterey. He added: “It is distasteful to me to travel in a foreign steamer, if a. British ship is available, but in this instance I had no alternative;”
