CLUTHA COUNTY
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YEAR'S WORK TO COST £10,647 At a meeting of the Clutha County Council yesterday the special committee set up to carry out the annual inspection of roads and bridges presented its report, together with the recommendations of works and expenditure for the ensuing year. , ■ An expenditure of £10,647 13s 9d was recommended, the amount the council is required to furnish being £3,471. Recommendations last year amounted to £6,301, but' the actual expenditure was only £4,359. The largest proportion of this sum was spent in maintenance of main highways, the expenditure averaging £23 10 s per mile. These figures were exceptionally low, and therefore, in contrast, the present recommendations seem very high. The large increase, however, is deemed unavoidable. The rebuilding of the Tahakopa bridge, the general improvement of the secondary highways, and two-coat sealing on the_ main highways account for the chief increases.
On the Dunedin-Invercargill main highway (361) miles) the recommended expenditure is £3,299 Is 3d (1933, £2,088 3s 7d). The road is in fair order and well surfaced with gravel. Two stretches of the road will require reforming, but the main work will be surface grading. Balclutha-Papatowai Main Highway (40 miles). —It is proposed to expend £2,0Q2 on this road, about £SOO more than last year. Other stretches of main highways, totalling\some 60 miles, call for an expenditure of _ £2,336. . Perries and bridges expenditure amount to £2,540. The report was adopted.
