NEWMAN SHIELD MATCH [Per UNiTEb Press Association.] NELSON, April 6. In the Newman Shield cricket match Nelson, in the first innings, has scored. 289 (A. Newman 157, 'Neale 65, Freeman 20). Creswell took six wickets for 86 runs. Marlborough (the challengers), in their first innings, have lost six wickets for 103 runs (Hastilow 24, O’Sullivan 24). CENTRAL OTAGO TOUR A team sponsored by the North-east Valley Cricket Club toured Central Otago at Easter, playing enjoyable matches and being hospitably treated by all the members met. A match was played at Becks against an Oamaru team, resulting in a win for Oamaru by 97 runs. The _ highest North-east Valley scorer in this match was J. Cullen, who made 23 out of a score. of 115. He also had the best bowling average, taking seven wickets for 40 runs. Against a Becks eleven, which made 197, the Valley team won by two wickets, Allen making 45 and Downes retiring with 45 runs. M. Cullen secured the best bowling average, taking three wickets for 10 runs. Journeying to Alexandra, the team played, the Excelsior Club, and dismissed the home side in its first innings for 30, J. Cullen taking five wickets fox--18 and T. Hughes four for 2. Northeast Valley’s first innings yielded 72, Briggs being top scorer with 20. The Excelsior Club declared with a score of 138 in the second innings, and dismissed five of the Valley team for 44, the game ending with a win on the first innings in North-east Valley’s favour. CLUTHA CLUB'S AVERAGES The following are the principal averages made by players of the Clutha Cricket Club during the past season. In shield and cup fixtures the club scored a total of 2,ooo'runs for the Joss of 100 wickets, an average of 20 runs per wicket. Opposing teams scored 995 runs for 123 wickets, making an average of 8.08 against the local team. T. Gold, as wicketkeeper, was a consistently good performer, allowing only 35 byes. He was instrumental in running out twelve batsmen, catching eleven and stumping three.
