GYPSOHILA GOES WELL WITH SWEET PEAS

Gypsophila paniculata, the chalk plant, or gauze flower, has been exceedingly popular tor a number of years, largely on account of its graceful sprays of small white blossoms, which are so useful for associating with sweet peas and other cut blooms. It is about ,'!ft in height. The double variety, G. paniculata fi. pi., is also popular. There are, however, other perennial gypsophiias, which are not so much in evidence in gardens, and some of them hardly even known to amateurs. One of these is G. acutifolia, listed as 2ft high, but often as much as 4ft. It has sprays of pale pink flowers, comes in late, and is a most useful plant for the horder. Another good gypsophila is G. polypetala. 2ft to 3ft high. Then Q. veluista blooms in midsummer, and is most serviceable as supplying a quantity of pale pink or white flowers, which also are excellent for cutting. It is about 18in or 2ft in height, and is a plant with a.future before it. Finally, there is G. Bristol Fairly, still a comparative novelty, but one that is already highly popular and must he reckoned among the best of hardy perennials. These gypsophilas all prefer a soil in which ilieie is ii little lime, although that is not essential, as they can be cultivated successfully in good loam in n. sunny place. Seeds of most Can be procured and sown in the ordinary way for hardy perennials, but plants may also be bought quite cheaply.
