GOLDEN “SLOTTED WINGS"

INVENTOR’S EARNINGS LONDON, March 26. Although it is not possible to state the exact amount which has been paid to the inventor and proprietors of the Handley Page slotted wing, there are not many more’ striking instances of the importance of invention and research and their value to the country of their origin. The French Government has just paid a large sum for the right to use this invention on both civil and military aeroplanes. At least ■ nine countries have now acquired such rights, but in some cases the terms have not been disclosed. The contrivance in one or another of its forms brings in royalties. The British Government paid £IOO,000 for the use of the slotted wing, the United States paid £BO,OOO, Italy has paid the equivalent of £60,000, and France, Japan, Canada, India, Finland, and Sweden have all purchased it. It may be remembered also that Mr Handley Page was successful in litigation in the United States respecting the slotted wing.
