TAIERI RIVER TRUST

The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held yesterday at Mosgiel. Cr T. M. Ball presided and Crs W. J. Marshall, Jas. Dow, F. Johnson, •R. B. Tennent, S. Snell, H. W. Wilson, and C. Findlay were present. REPORTS. The Works Committee stated that under the circumstances it had not been possible to present a report for this meeting. The Inspector reported that the following work had been completed during the month: —Lee Creek had been cleaned from the junction of the New Channel to Heenan’s (180 chains). The river bank at Blair’s property had been repaired. Marshall’s gang had . finished cleaning the New Cut (85 chains). Upper Duck creek had been cleaned from Momona road (50 chains). Surfacing had been carried out from Momona to Allanton on the river bank. The box at Smith’s property required attention.—Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. A ratepayer in the Outram district was granted a remission of the 10 per cent, penalty on half of his rates in view of the circumstances involved, and as his rates were now paid. Dalgety and Co. Ltd., Dunedin, asked the trust to remit arrears of rates on a property rated by the trust which they were about to offer for sale. —The company to be informed that no remission could be made. D. J. Cullen, Momona, inquired if the trust had a supply of gravel available for sale.—Granted permission to take gravel at 2s 6d per yard from the heap at the Contour. No charge to be made if gravel was taken from the stream. The city electrical engineer asked the trust to remove the obstruction caused by willow trees on the Main South road near Henley.—The trust decided to inform the electrical engineer that permission would be granted for iiis board to cut the trees. G.. R. Stirling (Allanton), on behalf of the relief workers employed by the trust, asked that the additional time granted to them last year be repeated this year.—Owing to the amount of seasonal work at present on offer the request was declined. APPEALS AGAINST CLASSIFICATION. Mr Duncan (of Messrs Duncan and MacGregor, solicitors) waited on the trust to obtain its opinion on the lodging of appeals by appellants against the Couston classification. As soine of the ratepayers concerned did not apparently know their exact position in the matter the clerk was instructed to advise all appellants against the classification of the date fixed for the hearing. DEPUTATION. J. A. G. Shaw (Henley) appeared before the trust in support of his letter. He had recently acquired portion of the trust’s endowments at Henley. Ho wished to erect a boundary fence with his neighbour, but could not locate him. He had made arrangements for stocking and improving the land, hut could not commence operations till the fence was erected. Mr Shaw also declared

that some six or seven acres of his leasehold were under water, being in the channel.-4-The trust resolved to assist its tenant in so far as guarantee ing to pay half-cost of the wire and 2s 6d per chain towards the cost of ereo tion of the fence. This cost is to be passed on to the adjoining owner, but if the latter took up his part of the erection no agreement on the trust’s part was required. The second matter was left for the trust’s inspection. GENERAL. The former resolution granting the leases of the trust’s endowments was ratified. A sub-committee consisting of Crs Ball and Tennent was appointed to consider the rates outstanding. The Willows gang has _ practically finished its work at the river. The clerk was instructed to arrange with the clerk, Taieri County Council, for the placing of the men. The next meeting of the trust was fixed for April 9. The cleaning of the main drain came forward for discussion. Dissatisfaction was expressed with the manner in which the work had been executed. Mention was made of cleaning drains by contract. The inspector was appointed-to furnish a report for next meeting on the drains which could he cleaned by contract labour. Ho was also empowered to employ an extra permanent emnloyee on the trust's works. The box at Wain’s drain is in need of attention, and the inspector was empowered to employ a suitable man to have the repairs effected. The routine work was placed under the inspector’s supervision for the month.
