FEW OBJECTIONS

SITTING OF ASSESSMENT COUNT VALUATIONS IN THE CITY The Assessment Court for the City of Dunedin sat yesterday to hear objections to valuations for rating purposes, Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., presiding. Of the twenty-three objections received thirteen were withdrawn, seven were struck out, two were sustained by the court, and one was reduced. The following cases were heard yesterday afternoon: — OBJECTION .STRUCK OUT.

John AY. Black objected to the assessment of £42 placed on his property at 183 Elgin road, Alornington. Air Black said bis house was a fourroomed wooden bungalow, for which lie considered 22s 6d a week was a fair rental. Tho Magistrate pointed out that if the assessment were based on a rental of 22s Cd it would be £46.

The objector said lie bought the place seven months ago. The rates were then £lO 8s 4d.

The ATagistrate; If you consider 22s 6d a fair rental you have been fairly treated. On your own showing you should have been assessed higher. The objection was struck out. ASSESSMENT SUSTAINED.

Harry Calder lodged an objection to the assessment of £42 placed on his property at 101 Neidpath road, Mornington. Mr Calder said his property was a, four-roomed house, with an eighth of an acre of ground. The rates were £9 15s when he bought the place in 1931. The next year they went up to £ll 3s sd, and hist year they were £B. which he considered a fair thing. Tie thought a fair rental would be 16s or £1 a week. He bought the place for £BOO. Cecil Bock, assistant valuer, said he had assessed the property on a letting value of £1 a week. The land was bought for £2lO in 1931, and the house built at a cost of £7OO, making a capital value of £9lO. The place had been assessed at £62 when a rent of 36s was being obtained. Tlie •Magistrate said Hint on the material before him the objector had no cause for complaint. Mo must assess him on the rateable value of the property. The valuation would be sustained.
