RELIEF ALLOTMENTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When a reduction of hours was first made in the relief workers’ working time under No. 5 scheme it was explained that the allotments of money were short. That can hardly be said now, for standard work is being liberally subsidised, and in some eases fully financed out of the relief funds, and yet the man not fortunate enough to be transferred to five days or a full week is still robbed of his 2s fid a week, 1 use the word “ robbed ” visably. it is a mean, contemptible action—a pure case of the strong taking advantage of the weak. It is a case of taking food from the table of the poor, for the allowance is,a meagre pittance at best, and to reduce it when plenty of- money is available is an act more worthy of a pagan than a Christian community. 1 appeal to the Press and the' public bodies of this city to take up the case and end a cruel, petty action. Every department of the City Council is fully exploiting the relief worker and relief funds, and the council could surely press for full allotted time, such as it is, for the men working for it. Strangely enough, men who receive an extra day can be paid the two hours also. The “ crust ” is taken from the lowest paid. Any man whose services are required all the time should be on the staff of that department which requiresvhim, and not on relief funds This would relieve the fund and make it possible to give a few more loaves of bread where they are needed.—l am, etc., G. Herring. February 24.
