EDUCATION MINISTER'S TOUR

CONFERENCE WITH BOARD i [Pk« United Pbkss Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. The Minister of Education (Mr R.' Masters) met members of the Education Board in an informal conference to-day. Mr R. Wild spoke of the resumption of the training of teachers, with special reference to the probationer system. He thought that all the boards were unanimous that the probationer system should not be abandoned, as it was a necessary part of the teacher’s training. It would be necessary in about two years to resume the training of teachers, and if the department would authorise the boards to employ probationers they would secure the cream of those who were offering. The Minister said that no decision had been reached regarding probationer teachers, but it had been discussed by the Cabinet. In England the probationer system was going out gradually, and students were going straight out into the training colleges. If that conclusion were arrived at in New Zealand it would not be done for financial reasons, but for other considerations. ,
