OTAGO CROQUET TOURNAMENT

NOTES ON THE PLAY In the A Grade handicap singles, on Saturday afternoon, two very good wins were scored. The first was Mrs Corbet’s from Mrs Caverhill, of Gore. The latter had six bisques against her opponent, hut Mrs Corbet’s experienced tactics stood her in good stead, and her spectacular pegout from right across the lawn made a good finish. J. Tannock and Mrs A. Corbet played a very quick game. ./The former made eleven hoops in his first break, and Mrs Corbet followed with the same. Play was then more or less in and out, until Mrs Corbet accidentally pegged her opponent out, when she had still five ,or six hoops to make with her other ball, and shei found it too difficult to get round, losing by 4 points. Three finals were decided in the afternoon. In the championship doubles, Mr and Mrs Corbet ■( Opoho) scored a very good win from Mrs Horn and Mrs Cowper. Mr Corbet was the first to reach the rover hoop. 1 Mrs Corbet soon followed. With a break of seven hoops and a peel through the rover, she picked up one of her opr ponents’ hall and pegged out in the next turn. Neither Mrs Horn nor Mrs Cowper was ever able to strike usual form throughout the game. In the final of the handicap doubles the Southland pair (Mesdames Wilson and Caverhill) had 2f bisques against their opponents (Mrs Cole and Mr Nichol). The game was disappointing. ’ The Opoho pair were not playing well and it was quite expected that fhe Southlanders, with their handicap, would have made a better finish. The finals of-the B grade championship doubles gave a win to a junior club —the Gardens Club, Oamaru—who sent down five players to compete in the tournament. We congratulate Oamaru on its win against two much more' experienced players. Neither side was willing to concede any little advantage, and in consequence the game was Jong drawn out and ended after an almost five hour contest, the score being 26-22. This morning Mrs Forrester (Leith) scored a good win from Mr Hart. The former had 5 bisques in her favour, but using only 3, she’played a fine open game, and won with 21 points to spare. In the championship singles, between Mr Hart and Mrs Cowper, the former played almost perfect croquet. He made a break of 11 hoppe, and wired his opponent at the peg. Mrs Cowper went to baulk and missed a long shot. The Timaru player got in with his red ball and went to the penultimate, where he baulked and let Mrs Cowper in. She werit to 4 hack, but Mr Hart then made a good recovery and pegged out, with a score of 26-10. Results;—■ A GRADE. CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. FIRST LIFE. —Second Round.— Mrs Cowper (Ch’ch) beat Mrs J.
