ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
FELL FROM CLIFF AND DROWNED. An Association message from Opotiki states that on Sunday at midday, Mrs. Boon, aged 28, the wife of Mr. E. A. Boon, the Waioeka schoolmaster, fell oyer a cliff at the Waioeka Gorge, 6| miles from Opotiki, and was drowned. The tragedy took place on the concluding day of the Waioeka School Golden Jubilee celebrations. FOREMAN SHIPWRIGHT KILLED. The death of Arthur John Willetts, aged 67, a foreman shipwright, occurred in the Auckland Hospital on Saturday evening. The deceased was well known on the Auckland waterfront. He narrowly escaped being drowned last Thursday when he slipped while working on the vessel Baroona and fell into the harbour between, the vessel and the wharf. In falling he struck his head against the wharf and Was rendered unconscious. Mr. Willetts was eventually pulled out of the water with the aid, or a rope. ’ When taken to hospital he was in a serious condition, as he was suffering from severe head injuries and concussion. CAR COLLISION. As the result of a collision on Sat’urday morning between cars driven by Mr. Imlay Saunders,'of Wanganui, aha Mr. Holland, jun., of Greatford, on tho Bulls-Turakina road, Air. Holland, sen., a passenger in his son’s car, was taken to hospital suffering from injuries to the head and back. Mr. Holland, jun., and another passenger, Mr. P. Gibbons,, were discharged after treatment. Air. Saunders and his wife escaped with abrasions. ' Both cars were damaged almost beyond repair, STRUCK BY TRAIN. Lucillo Davanzo, aged 28, was killed instantly near Shannon on Saturday afternoon when a motor cycle which he was riding was, struck by a special goods train and burled 40ft. YOUTH DROWNED, A Thames Association message states that a distressing fatality; occurred at Ngatea, Hauraki Plains, yesterday, Edward Henry Joseph Harris, aged 19i, a farm hand employed by Air J. Darlington, being drowned in the Piako River at about 3 p.m. He was seen in a swinmiing suit on the Ngatea wharf, and later a factory employee,; John Tyson) Heard a splash and then calls. He dived into the river and saw Harris come to the surface and then disappear. There was a strong current at' - thtf time, and dragging operations have not yet recovered the body. SHUNTER INJURED. Albert Southey, aged twenty-five, employed by the New Zealand/railways, had his left foot run over, by the wheel of a truck whilst-engaged m shunting operations, at Seacliff on Saturday. When he was admitted to the hospital at 7.30 p.m. he was suffering from severe lacerations of the foot. HEAD INJURIES RECEIVED. At 6 p.m. on Saturday, Thomas Farrell, aged sixty-eight years,* residing at 101 Alaclaggan street, was l taken to the Public Hospital by the ambulance, suffering from head injuries, apparently received as the result of a fall in the street. MAORI YOUTH DIES FROM - INJURIES. A Alaori, Wallace APClatchie, aged nineteen, died in the hospital as the result of injui’ies sustained at Ruatoria whilst riding pillion on a motor cycle. He was wearing spurs, which caught in the wheel.—Gisborne Press Association. * ARM TORN BY FLYWHEEL Severe injury to his right arm was received by H, Barrett Wood, Melbourne yachtsman was recently concerned in an attempt to cross Cook Strait in an outboard launch. When he was testing a speedboat in Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon, Air Wood 1 was adjusting the engine when tha motor flew up and the flywheel, turning 4,000 revolutions per minute, cam« in contact with his forearm which was badly torn. Wood was admitted b> Wellington Hospital.
