POLICE COURT

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Matthew Healey, a statutory first offender, was fined 10s, in default twenty, four hours’ imprisonment. James Mill Jennings, charged with drunkenness and being unlawfully on premises after hours, was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours, on each count. LICENSEE FINED. Samuel Wilson Geddes was charged with exposing liquor for sale after hours on February 24. Defendant said he had supplied liquor to a man under the misapprehension that he was a boarder. Sergeant Wade said that when a sergeant and a constable entered the premises of the Gridiron Hotel they found two men in the bar with liquor before them. One man was a boarder, but the other was not, and had no right on the promises. The licensee said he served the man because he said he was staying till next day, and had paid 6s for board. The man, however, lived in town, and later left for his home. “ The hotel is one of the best conducted in Dunedin,” said Sergeant Wade. “ Geddes has never previously been before the court for a breach of the Licensing Act, though he has held a license to my knowledge for over thirty years. 1 am of opinion that in this case the licensee was probably misled.” , , , Defendant said the man booked up for accommodation—bed. breakfast, and dinner, and paid 6s. Ho at first refused him a drink, hut when the man paid up he thought he was a boarder. The Magistrate, who said the delendant ought to have been alive to such event, imposed a fine of £2, with costs (10s), ALLEGED PILLAGING.

David Griffiths was charged with the theft of a lady’s cardigan, valued at 7s lid, from the New Zealand Shipping Company Ltd., at Port Chalmers. Mr C. J. L. White asked for a remand until Wednesday, adding that he had only been instructed tin's morning. The remand was granted, bail being allowed as before.
