PRISONERS SENTENCED

[Pek United Press Association.] PALAIERSTON N., February 9. The following prisoners were sentenced by Air Justice Blair in the Supreme Court: —William Henry Smith and William John Wade, both fifty-five, breaking and entering by day witli intent to commit a crime—Smith, probation for eighteen months; Wade, one month’s imprisonment. Counsel characterised the offence as a drunken spree. George Hnbner (26) for indecent assault on a male, at Eeilding, was allowed probation for two years. His Honour commented that accused was not a criminal in the ordinary sense. AUCKLAND, February 9. Mrs Jane Evelyn Craig, aged thirtythree, was formally tried in the Supreme Court on a charge of murdering her two-months-old baby at Avondale on January 22. After the evidence of mental specialists had been given, the jury, without leaving the box, acquitted her on the ground of insanity, and Air Justice Herdman ordered her detention in prison until the pleasure of the Alinister of Justice is known.
