AVIATION IN SOUTH OTAGO

AERO CLUB FORMED [From Oob Correspondent.] A meeting was held in Balclutha last night to discuss the development of interest in aviation in South Otago. Mr R. R. Grigor was elected to the chair. He remarked that the meeting was, in a way, a recognition by the citizens of the importance of flying m the future development of the district, and in this connection it was pleasing to see young men, prospective pilots, well represented. It was just three vears ago sines a meeting was convened locally by the Otago Aero Club and a local branch committee was formed. This committee had done good work. Arrangements for a lauding ground had been made, and up to date five A pilots had been trained and seven more were under instruction. It was thought that it was now time to put the movement on a more definite footing, and the Otago Club was entirely in agreement with this idea. Relations in the past had been very cordial, and it could ■ confident!v be expected that they would continue so The speaker then outlined the proposal to form au aero club in South Otago,

and after discussion tho motion was put to the meeting and declared car--1 The election of officers was then proceeded with, and the following appointments were made : —Patron, Mr P. M'Skimming. M.P.; president Mill. R. Grigor; vice-presidents, Messrs Nicholson and 11. R* Jack; secretary, Mr F. A. Wcddc; committee —Messrs J. Stevenson, K. Mitchell, C. Lewis, F. Waite, R. I>. M'Donald, T. M. Thompson, D. Sinclair, and the Mayor of Balclutha (Mr D. T. Fleming), ex officio; ground engineer, Mr G. Could; auditor, Mr E. Barnett. Various subcommittees were appointed and other details arranged. . The projected visit of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smitli in March was .then discussed, and a committee appointed to make preparations. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Fleming congratulated the members on their enthusiasm, and wished the club the success it deserved..
