The list of horses purchased as yearlings at moderate figures furnishes much interesting material. Sorting out fifteen winners in Australia and New Zealand, “ Phaeton ” in the Auckland ‘ Herald ’ has found that the highest price paid for any one of them was 650 gs, and that, while the total purchase money was 4,490g5, the stakes won by them aggregate £486,881 10s. Following is a list of the selected fifteen horses:— Price as Stakes Yearling. Won. ' . Gs. £

was -bought as a foal for 500 gs, so that he also is entitled to be viewed as a golden bargain. JOTTINGS. Silver Ring was an unlikely starter in the Publicans Handicap this afternoon. The heavy going at AVingatui this afternoon upset the chances of several well-fancied c«ndidates ; Forty-four new members were elected at Thursday’s meeting of members ot the Canterbury Jockey Club. It was stated in the city this morning that the Dunedin Cup had never been run in rain.

L. J. Ellis rode four winners at Egmont, bringing his total up to thirtythree, only nine behind the leader, K. Voitre, who has struck a lean patch. It was reported last evening that the influx of visitors to Dunedin for the Cup Meeting was so large that all of the leading hotels were fully booked up. Owing to a bereavement in the family of his owner, Salmo Salar will run at the Dunedin Cup Meeting in the nomination and colours of Mr A. N. Smith. After such a long spell of really summer weather it was most unfortunate for the club that the weather should have broken on the eve of the Cup meeting. The proposal to shorten the course at Riccarton was discussed at a meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club on Tuesday afternoon, but the idea was not considered practicable. “ Victorian breeders can take heart from the prices received by New Zealand breeders for their yearlings at the national yearling sales at Trentham. It certainly looks as if Australian breeders can expect a substantial increase in average for their youngsters.”—Melbourne ‘ Herald.’ W. J. Tomkinson has experienced a lot of trouble with Indianapolis previous to the Forbury Park Meeting, the big pacer’s feet being the cause of it. In consequence he was not able to give him the work to fit him for a contest, but since then matters have improved a good deal. On Monday Tomkinson was well satisfied that Saturday’s race had done Indianalolis no harm. Asked about the record established, Tomkinson said Indianapolis liked horses round about him when racing, and was inclined to loaf when left on his own in front. He was doubtful as to whether his horse could have gone any faster if tackled by another at the finish. An interesting event included in the programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting is the Peerswick Brush Hurdles, which is to take the place of the Peerswick High-weight Handicap, previously carded. The distance is to be two miles, and the brush obstacles are to be on the lines of the brush hurdles so popular just now in Sydney. They will each consist of a wooden frame or base two feet high, holding brush, which will he one foot nine inches above the frame, making a total height of three feet nine inches. The disqualification of three months imposed on L. A. Maidens at Addington on Saturday debars him from racing or even training horses at the present time, and horses leased by him are also debarred from racing until their owners have the disability removed. The horses affected in this case include Harvest Child and Guyziah. Up till recently Maidens held an interest in the good pacer Blue Mountain, but now the gelding is the sole pi’operty of Mrs 1. E. Sweetapple, of Auckland. J. T. Jamieson intends taking a strong team to Melbourne (says a Sydney writer) and it is interesting that ho has entered his three-year-old Limarch in' the Australian Cup. Had an injured heel not affected him throughout the spring racing Limarch might have proved himself the second three-year-old to Hall Mark, for his form suggested real stamina, and he possessed a turn of speed which would have stood to him in the classics. In the early stages of his preparation Limarch has progressed well, and, although three-year-olds have not a good record in the Australian Cup, it is only because really good horses of that age do not, tackle l the long handicap. There are not many New Zealanders engaged in the principal Australian autumn handicaps, but from the cabled summary of the weights it is obvious that none of them are thrown in. Nightly’s '8.2 in the King’s Cup is interesting. It is 21b under his weight-for-age, while Hall Mark has been given 51b over. Nightly is treated as a sound stayer, for in the Sydney Cup, over half a mile further than the King’s Cup, he is rated 31b above w.f.a., and Hall Mark is still considered 71b his superior. Concentrate would do well at his weights if he were in form. Minerva], Peter Jackson, and Forestry seem reasonably treated. In view of her spring form and win in the A.R.C. Royal Stakes, Golden Hair seems the best handicapped of the New Zealanders.

Five high-priced yearlings bought at the Trentham sales by Australian sportsmen last year were left at Trentham to be broken in and put through their early work, and so successful were the results that the same course has been followed this year by the Sydney racing men for whom the Randwick trainer, G. Price, was acting in buying seven of the highest-priced lots at last week’s sales. The seven youngsters are now under the care of H. Telford, who lias already started breaking them in, and they will not be sent across to Sydney till next April. Among -them are the Limond —Imprudence colt, who made top price, being purchased by Mr E. J. Watt for 850 gs; the Gainscourt —Desert Gold filly, for whom Mr Watt paid 325g5; the Limond—Curtain colt and the Posterity—Veil colt, who were purchased by Mr E. Moss for 350 gs and 500 gs respectively: the Iliad—Quadrilateral colt and the Night Raid—Rosita colt, for whom Mr J. S. Brunton paid 550 gs each; and the Limond— Anklet colt, who was knocked down to Mr A. Aldritt for 425g5,
