MONTHLY MEETING The Taieri River Trust lield monthly meeting at Mosgiel yesterday, Mr T. M. Rail presiding. AIRPORTS. The trust’s Joreman reported that the lollowing work had been executed during the month:—'the new cut had been cleaned Irani " JA " drain to the Utokia road (15-1 chains). The bridge on rvirk’s dram at Mrs Reid's property had heeu repaired. iUr MarshaiTs gang had cleaned eighty-nine chains oi' the new cut. A new box had been inserted in the pipe line at Row’s property'.—Report adopted. Thu Works Committee had no new works to report upon, sufficient work being in hand tor the month.—Noted. CUR RESPON DENCE. A ratepayer applied to the trust for the remission ol the LU per cent, penalty on his rates. The trust regretted it could nut remit the penalty ror the 1932 rates, but il all arrears were paid consideration would be given to a concession of the balance of the L 933 rates, provided payment was made before March 31, 1934. The Public Works Department, Wellington, in reference to the repayment of the £79,800 loan for Taieri flood protection, considered it inadvisable to alter the existing legislation, and suggested that the trust raise a loan to repay the Government the amount owing.—Received. Mr J. A. G. Shaw advised that he intended fencing the land leased by him from the trust, and asked if half-cost would he shared in the erection of the fencing.—Mr Shaw to be advised that owing to the leasing of more of the trust’s endowments, his adjoining owner would need to be consulted as to the kind of fence required ; the trust to he informed of their decision TENDERS. Several tenders were received t'or lots 2 and 5 of the trust’s endowment leases. Mr R. J. Geary was the successful tenderer for lot 2 and Mrs H. M. Wilson for lot 5. DEPUTATION. The clerk (Mr Logan) and the inspector of works (Mr Garrett) of the Taieri County Council waited on the u-ust with a view to reaching finality m the matter of the erection of a bridge over Kirk’s drain at Mrs Shand’s property, Maungatua. Mr Logan pointed out that the legal opinion expressed in the Public Works Act dealing with such matters was open to different interpretations. The trust’s chairman stated that it was more a moral responsibility than a legal one. His board could assist the council and the settler in reducing the size of crossing required.—The trust therefore decided to notify the council that it could not offer any contribution towards the erection of the crossing, but it would consent to a 4ft pipe. IBft in length, being inserted, provided, that the pipes were lowered below th* bottom of the drain to a sufficient* depth. t ' v GENERAL. ' The secretary was instructed to give a month’s notice to the Mosgiel Borough Council notifying that the trust was* relinquishing the lease of the ■ffice belonging to the council.
